Hampshire and Berkshire Rebels and the Waytes

I've now tracked down that Thomas Hampton, the Skillings, the Waytes and the Stonors are all related as we thought.

The family which unites them all is the Coudray family of Herriard Hants and Lyford Berkshire. They descend from Edward Coudray (died 1428) who was High Sheriff of Berkshire and Bishop Wykeham's Bailiff of Highclere.

William Wykeham (born Long) founded Winchester College and New College Oxford and was of course Bishop of Winchester. The 1483 Bishop of Winchester was William Waynflete, who according to Horrox, Richard didn't trust. I recall he had a habit of targeting heirless estates in a bid to fund schools (or something else perhaps)? And of course he sat in the middle of Hampshire.

William of Wykeham turns up in the history of quite a few of our Hampshire and Berkshire rebels and, through his sister, he even extends through the Perrots to the 12 Knights of Glamorgan :)

One of the most famous protegees of Winchester College and New College Oxford is John Russell, whose first prebendary was at Salisbury. If we could link him to the Russells of Strensham it could be very interesting, but he's very elusive to chase. It's particularly interesting given his possible authorship of Croyland.

BTW for proof EW's influence extending to Hampshire see the following from TNA:

Reference:SC 6/1094/4Description:

(Langley Marish, &c.--lands of Elizabeth the Queen) (Including lands in Broughton, Mottisfont (Motfont), Wallop (Wallopstrete), Lockerley, Holbury Mill, Ford (Foord), Bramshaw (Brambleshaw), and East Tytherley) (as in last Roll): [Buckingham, &c.] Description of Officer: Divers Ministers

These are lands of whom some of our rebels are feoffees.

Sorry about the typeface. This is difficult to write on today. H
