Someone wants to create a reclining statue of Richard III to go alongside those of Richard I and his parents, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Wrong era, anyone?

Doug here: Well, apparently there's already a recumbent figure of the first Plantagenet monarch of England, so having one of the last Plantagenet monarch wouldn't be too out of place; at least in my opinion. Of course, Richard's figure would have to be clearly labeled for what it was: a much later addition! Doug who'd personally rather see any money raised go into further research on Anglo-French relations from, say, the mid-1480s...

While I have no objection to a statue of Richard III in France, I have to ask why? Richard I, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II are the only Plantagenets buried in this monastic foundation in France and even then their bodies are no longer there; I heard that they were thrown out with the Revolution. Why put a reclining statue of Richard here when there is no connection? The idea of a reclining statue sounds as if they want to make a false tomb; which makes no real sense. What about the rest of the Plantagenets? All of them are buried in England, but that does not mean they cannot have a statue in France; but it is only the early family that are there so again, wha is the point? I know they want to honour Richard, well they had a great party; that sounds like plenty of honour. Surely a more contemporary idea of Richard would be showing him as a law giver or as a patron of learning or the church? Well, I am sure they will come up with something more fitting.

It has been suggested that honouring the last Plantagenet alongside the first ones could have a sense. Mac

Yes! He came top of the most interesting historical people in BBC History magazine. Even beating Winston Churchill, Liz I and fat Henry. Though 'they' of course claimed it couldn't last. H

Silly 'they'. Perhaps they'll learn that once a person becomes loyal to Richard, they don't abandon him.
