In reply to Dora Smith in Number 1268 who said Anne Neville was
instructive in confining her mother to a convent.
I thought that the Countess of Warwick lived with Anne and her
husband Richard at Middleham. I believed she lived a very religious
life very similar to a nun but that may had been her choice. It was
quite common for noble older women especially widows to live like
that. I think it was the same for Richard's mother Cecily Nevill in
her widowhood.

Sir James Tyrrel was said to have been the one that accompanied her
up North. She'd gone into sanctuary after her husband's death - at
Beulieu (sp?), if memory serves, but she wasn't 'confined to a
convent' by anyone - not even Tudor, to whom she appealed for the
return of her property after Richard's death.

[You'll remember of course that Tudor agreed,
on condition she signed everything back over to him.
She was allowed to keep one manor however - the one she lived in
until her death. Which was nice.

(And they reckon that *Richard* had a funny
way of dealing with vulnerable old ladies...)Bah!]

Richard's mother Cecily Duchess of York didn't in fact retire from public
life until after her son's death. But I too thought the Countess of Warwick
lived at Middleham with her youngest daughter.

The way I remember it, I think it was Ross who argued
that! That was a very old post!
